Website tracking my location…..don’t track me!

Never allow websites to request your physical location

It seems that everyone is concerned with privacy these days.  If you are like me, you probably get tons of standardized letters from companies these days telling you their privacy policies.  Now there is some good bed time reading.  How about checking in at a doctor’s office….you have to sign that privacy statement.  Everyone also seems to be concerned with internet privacy.

Companies are trying to gather information about us everywhere we go these days.  Do you give out your email address to a store when you are buying a new pair of jeans at the checkout counter?  Personally, I decline but that is just me.

Now there is a new thing (well not that new) called geolocation which described in Wikipedia is the identification of the real-world geographic location of an object, such as a radarmobile phone or an Internet-connected computer terminal. Geolocation may refer to the practice of assessing the location, or to the actual assessed location.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geolocation

Have you ever checked into a location on Facebook?  Each time we do this, the information is gathered into a database for marketers to use to market to us.  Now, this is good and bad in my opinion.  The marketers know where we visit and can send specific advertisements our way and also they can track where we like to go.  Have you ever noticed in Facebook how the ads on the right hand side are things relevant to our likes?  Tracking our internet activity……  The one good thing is that you may get get a coupon on something you want to purchase.

By default, certain websites request your geolocation and they are tracking that information.  If you are not keen on wanting this in some database in some disclosed location, you can turn this feature off.  I am not sure who is using this information from particular website servers that track this information but I don’t want someone to know that I am out of town and my house is empty.  I would love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments section.
